What is application hosting?

In application hosting the software applications are installed on a server in a data center rather than on the desktop PC (and customer's server).  The Remote Desktop Connection / Terminal Services program on the PC is used to turn the PC into what is essentially a terminal.  You can even use an Apple Mac or Linux desktop to run hosted Microsoft Windows applications via Terminal Services.

What is the difference between a web application delivered over the internet and application hosting?

Web delivered applications utilize a web browser to interact with the application.  A hosted application delivered by Terminal Services enables the user to interact with the application just as they would if it was installed on the PC. 

What kind of applications can be hosted?
